A T R E E Traditional Glazed CAT BROWN
DRAGON BONSAI STUDIO Québec, Canada 2025 5.5 x 16 x 4 inches Stoneware Clay, Glazed, Oxide Wash Body and Feet Separately Wheel Thrown Gas Fired, Reduction, Max Temperature ~1225ºC "The vitality of this traditional, round pot arises from its interplay of curves cascading over a sensuous form heavy with life. A mind experiences and mirrors the harmonious rhythm, design, and movement of trees. What if this pot’s mind contemplates “What is a tree?” Its response is to stir with the forces of life within it, and mimic branches (varied sinuous surfaces), fruits (ripe, full form), roots (intertwining decoration), and organic structures (curly rim and feet embody organic growth and energy). At the heart of this piece is a creative imagining of the full embrace of trees animating this container. The body and feet were separately wheel thrown. I used a standard, base glaze recipe, which I combined with additives. Specifically, I have been developing this glaze and its application to obtain more variegation, richness, and depth. An oxide wash was used to highlight the stamped decoration. It was fired in a gas kiln in reduction to a maximum temperature of about 1225ºC"

A B O U T C A T B R O W N
I grew up in my mom’s studio and was encouraged to experiment with ceramics. I pursued oceanography in Nova Scotia and France, but the call of clay was stronger than that of the sea. In my studio in Quebec, I explore aesthetic influences across time and space and chart artistic adventures.
