I create bonsai pots with a strong focus on form and function. Inspired by American folk pottery and influenced by Asian aesthetics, my goal is to create pots that enhance, not overpower, the overall bonsai display. I want the tree and pot combination to be more appealing than either element on its own.

But pots need to be more than just good looking, so I try to make pots that function well. I incorporate plenty of drainage and wire tie-down holes. Sometimes I'll form an interior lip to hold moss for show displays and I'll leave a little more weight in the bottom of some of my pots so they stay on the benches without having to tie them down.

I got my first bonsai in the nineties. I really became enamored with bonsai 15 years later after attending a workshop at Natures Way. I completed multi-year intensive bonsai studies at Eisei-en in Tennessee and trained in pottery under John Fullwood at Kissimmee River Pottery.

As owner of Ed Dyke Pottery, I create functional pottery with a focus on bonsai containers. I'm a pottery instructor at Flemington Pottery teaching a full range of pottery skills including hand building and wheel throwing as well as glazing.
