"My work is an expression of the inspiration the natural world brings, the traditional roots of Asian ceramics in which I have trained for 25 years, and my desire to bring humble yet distinct and unique creative elements into my art without distracting from the tree. In this piece, the addition of rough slip texturing, an integrated and solid foot, and red iron oxide add modern interest to a classic form with the aim of complementing the bark of the pots subject. Oxide finish applied in a gradient draws the viewer's gaze upward to the tree, ensuring the pots embellishment does not distract." - Jon

Jon Lang has studied ceramics and horticulture for over 25 years. His work in bonsai represents a more recent harmonization of his passions under the studio name Crucible Ceramics. Mentored by revered potters focused on Japanese design and techniques, he seamlessly combines Kaizen (pursuit of perfection) with Wabi-Sabi (imperfect impermanence), infusing a humble and nuanced depth into his creations.
