3.5 x 3.25 x inches
Kentucky Mudworks Speckled Turtle Clay
Wheel Thrown, Hand Carved, Glazed

Electric Firing, Cone 6 Oxidation
"This pot was wheel thrown with Kentucky Mudworks Speckled Turtle clay. The bottom was trimmed on the wheel. The feet and pot exterior were hand carved. I chose Mayco Peacock glaze. It was fired to cone 6 in an electric kiln. It took approximately 2-4 hours to create this piece.

The pot was inspired by the growth habits of crape myrtle, which grows tall, then spreads out like water flowing from a fountain. I envision a kusamono with bright red or yellow flowers, perhaps some blood grass, or sedum cascading down off the sides of the pot. A mame, cascading satsuki azalea bonsai would also be a possibility.

I believe this pot conforms to the classical Japanese Bonsai aesthetic. It is a simple form, yet has an elegance to it."

Like many bonsai practitioners, I have faced the dilemma of finding the right pot for a particular bonsai. After retiring in 2019, I took my first pottery class. I enjoy the creative process of making bonsai pottery. I make wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery for kusamono and shohin bonsai. As far as future work, I enjoy carving my pots, and strive to improve my technique and style to create pots with texture, which enhances the composition.
