Traditional Glazed NAO TOKUTAKE
TOKUTAKE BONSAI Oregon, USA 2025 15.5 x 12 x 5.25 inches Kenmokko, Clay, Handbuilt, Slab and Coil Construction Wood Ash Copper Glaze, Cone 10, Local Reduction Carved Applique of American Flora and Fauna Ball and Claw Feet This submission imagines a bonsai pot from America’s colonial period while employing a contemporaneous 18th century “Canton” motif and glaze.
Canton pots traditionally feature crude floral motifs, but the iconography is charged with Asian significance e.g. plum blossoms, lotus. This pot features uniquely New World flora and fauna: Carolina parakeet with bald cypress, magnolia and moon moth, Virginia creeper, tobacco etc. The designs are carved appliqué. The kenmokko shape has four panels to frame the carvings, while the soft edges complement informal trees. The floor and walls are slab and the rim is coil built. The feet are ‘ball and claw’ derived from New England furniture designs. The glaze is formulated like traditional low alumina Canton glazes, but sources its calcium from un-sifted pine ash. Ash is a naturally variable material giving texture and opalescence. The glaze is applied without intention, instead the kiln flame is invited to paint the surface with local reduction. |
