In honor of our friendship and as a tribute to the historical ties between our communities, the North American Bonsai Pottery Competition is proud to showcase selections of Japanese bonsai pots, generously shared by the Japanese bonsai community.

"This pot is inspired by a jagged cliff along the shore, with waves crashing relentlessly. Perhaps a Black Pine grows close by, enduring the gusts of wind."

"The theme of my pot making has always been “beautiful pots” that blend both Japanese and Western taste. I began my pottery with tableware and vases, and by chance, I started making Bonsai pots. At first, I learned a little about plant pots, Kusamono, and Bonsai. But I soon stopped after learning the basics. I felt that studying horticulture and Bonsai pots in depth might constrain me or limit my creativity with traditions and theories, preventing me from freely creating my own pots.

Also, when I looked at existing pots, many of them did not suit my taste. I thought that if I made pots in my own style, as pottery works, I could see a different perspective. In a sense, you could say that I do not make pots strictly as Bonsai pots.

I was often told that my pots were difficult to use or not suitable for exhibitions, in the manner of former Prime Minister Mori. In any field, it seems there are elites who criticize or look down on others to make themselves feel superior. I think this old-fashioned tendency still exists, especially in the traditional horticulture world.

I don’t mind if my pots are not considered “good” as long as they shine as works of pottery or art. You could say that my goal of expressing my concept and sense of beauty as a pottery work has shifted from tableware to Bonsai pots.

Many veterans or buyers may think this approach is irreverent, but I believe my pots are born from this fundamental philosophy. If I had made pots in the usual way, they would not have been featured over 50 times in magazines such as Horticulture Japan, Hobby of Wild Flowers (Kusamono Bonsai), and Bonsai World, nor would they have caught the attention of Angelica and other collectors from overseas." - Sasuryo
