Handmade, Pinch Pot Technique, Hand Painted

White Stoneware, Underglaze Paint, Clear Satin Glaze
Fired to Cone 5
"Hand painted and made by myself. Clay is white stoneware, constructed using the pinch pot technique. Underglazes were first used to create a background color, then the patterns were painted over the top. I then applied a clear satin glaze over the top, all while being greenware. Pot only had one final fire to Cone 5.

This is my take on the Traditional Style of Japanese Imari ware, or brightly colored hand painted pottery. Unlike tradition, where great time is spent planning out precise background colors/locations, etc., I tend to apply every color underglaze I can possibly get ahold of and use multiple techniques from brushing to splattering, as well rubbing them off and removal, to the point where before I even start actually hand painting the pot, the background colors of underglaze resemble more of a painters floor or dropcloth. With a very Wabi Sabi type feel of unpredictability, in regards to precisely how the end product will turn out, every pot is unique. I then, on top of this colored mix-mash background, hand paint my artwork. There's only one firing, so I don't know what the end result will look like."

I am a self-taught potter. Everything I know about the art is through trial and error. I don't own a kiln and take my pieces to be fired at a local school. I have always tried to do unconventional type work, within the confines of what could pass as traditional. I also always figured what's the point of making and selling work that just looks like something someone can go on Ebay and find 20 of, and have them shipped from Japan?

Interestingly, I have shipped my work to Japan numerous times. I've entered the Gafu-Ten Small Bowl Competition numerous times and I've won 2nd Place in the Hand Painted Pottery Category, the first westerner to place in this category.
