THOMAS ADCOCK
ERLOOM
Oregon, USA

2025

2.25 x 7.75 x 6 inches
Hot Rolled Steel
Chemical Patina Mixture, Plastic Wrap, Matte Lacquer
"Erloom exists to disrupt the current bonsai culture. From the materials of the pots themselves to the use of red-orange in the visual language, Erloom is meant to stand-out and represent something that hasn’t come before. The design and engineering of these pots were inspired by Japanese carpentry, specifically a joinery system that doesn’t rely on glue, hardware, or other means of adhesion, providing a minimalist and cost effective way to create metal forms. This also allows for flat-packing prior to construction.

This Erloom pot is fiber-laser cut from 11 gauge hot rolled steel, sanded to remove excess material leftover from the cutting process, and finished by hand. Through the specific joinery pattern, each side of the pot slide together and interlock, further fusing together through patina. The patina on this particular pot is a unique chemical application that has then been sealed with a matte lacquer.
My goal with the patina was to blur the line between ceramics and metal work, creating a patina that resembles stone, particularly Feldspar Granite."

Thomas Adcock is a versatile creative, featuring work that spans across brand, graphic, retail, experience, digital, product, and social design. For the past 10 years, Thomas has been the visionary of iconic work for one of the world's most respected and beloved brands with work that is visceral and centered around storytelling. He believes design is a philosophy that can transcend mediums.

The art of bonsai has been in Thomas' life since he was very young. His grandfather, Walt Brainerd, was deeply connected to the tree’s he crafted, spending much of his life caring for his collection that grew and changed with time. Thomas' grandfather no longer practices the art of bonsai, but Thomas has begun his own journey to explore this relationship with time and nature.

Erloom bonsai pots are the convergence of their passions. Where his love for design intertwines with his grandfather’s love of bonsai.
